I'll share one of the best kept secrets of Ontario - check out: Rockwood Conservation Area for a great end-of-summer road trip! It’s about an hour drive from Toronto.
I adore Rockwood for the incredible variety of activities all offered within close distance to each other:
picnic areas (great for barbecues)
beaches (sandy beaches, shallow water safe for young children to play in with adult supervision)
kayaking/paddle boarding rentals (First, you have to pay a hefty $50 deposit fee, but when you return the equipment, they only charge $15. Credit card/ Cash accepted, no debit, if I recall!)
hiking (easy hikes with shaded areas in the forest, minimal inclines, and even roads that you can push a stroller along!)
As an activity junkie, I try to hit up a combination of all these activities at each visit.
The area is has great amenities for families and big groups as well:
2-story picnic area with shelter (for those suddenly rainy moments!)
bathroom facilities (for those who want to experience nature without going completely au-naturale, haha!)
In school, my research team and I took a big group trip (~20 people) to RCA, and since then, it's been one of the highlights of my university experience! I bring my family and friends here every summer.

Do you have other suggestions for Ontario road trips? I'd love to hear your ideas! My family is a stickler for visiting new places around Ontario!
